Climate

The Gold Coast is primarily a tropical savanna climate, with distinct dry summer (November to April) and wet winter (May to October) seasons.  Most of the region’s rainfall occurs in the wet season, thus the summers are hot and dry, especially by the beaches and other areas of low altitude. Because of the predictability of climate, the Gold Coast is popular throughout the year, with winters much milder than in monsoonal and rainforest areas of the coastline, but still seeing a return to the verdant greens that define Costa Rica. Average high temperatures fluctuate between 31 ℃ (87 ℉) and 36 ℃ (96 ℉), with lows ranging from 21 ℃ (69 ℉) in winter months, to 32 ℃ (89 ℉) in the summer months.

Brasilito

Brasilito

Brasilito, Costa Rica, a small, genuine fishing village wedged between two of Guanacaste's most coveted resort destinations, is one of the last authentically Tico beach communities on the Gold Coast — a town that has so far refused to be absorbed by the luxury development pressing in from both sides.

Huacas

Playa Grande

Playa Grande, Costa Rica, a small, low-key surf and conservation community on the northern edge of the Gold Coast, sits on the other side of the Tamarindo estuary from its more famous neighbor — separated by the Río Matapalo, accessible by boat or the longer overland route, and as a result a bit more insulated from most of Tamarindo's development pressure. It is simultaneously one of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches in the world and one of the most consistently excellent surf breaks on the Pacific coast, giving it a character that is part conservation biology field station, part surf camp, and part quiet beach escape.

Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste

Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica, which literally means "Beautiful Beach," is the Gulf of Papagayo's most family-friendly beach community. Calm, swimmable water, 25km from LIR airport, and a residential character defined by families and retirees who chose calm over surf. (Not to be confused with Playa Hermosa near Jacó.)

Playa Potrero

Tucked into the northern crescent of Potrero Bay on Guanacaste's Gold Coast, Playa Potrero is the quietest and most residential of the Flamingo-area communities — a place that has somehow held its character through the boom that transformed its neighbors, remaining genuinely community-oriented, family-friendly, and calm while sitting in the middle of one of the most infrastructure-rich stretches of the Pacific coast.

Playas del Coco

Playas del Coco is the Gulf of Papagayo's commercial hub, 35 minutes from LIR. The most service-complete beach town in northern Guanacaste — with supermarkets, banks, dive shops, nightlife, and an established foreign community.

Tamarindo

Tamarindo, Costa Rica, stands out as Guanacaste's most internationally developed beach town. Fiber-optic internet, co-working spaces, a walkable town center, consistent surf, and the densest foreign-resident social scene on the Gold Coast. Expensive, energetic, and occasionally crowded.
